I’m back
I took the offseason off everybody but I am back now that Spring Training is about to get started. I live in Clearwater, FL about two blocks from the stadium and I also work there. I will be updating this as often as I can with Phillies news.
Wow has it been a busy offseason for Ruben and the rest of the front office. We finally got Halladay! And to show just how hard of a worker he is, I have seen him at Brighthouse a couple of times, and he runs on the trail here everyday. I have a feeling that it will come down to Roy and Lincecum for Cy Young this year and Halladay wil have at least 20 wins. Giving up Drabek, Taylor, and D’Arnaud but we got back Aumont, Gillies, and Ramirez. Aumont is a natural freak. He is 6’7 and will probably slot in behind Roy and Cole in a few years. Gillies is legally deaf but had an amazing year last year, and I see Ramirez either at the back end of our rotation or in the bullpen in the coming years. I think dealing Lee was genius, he didn’t put up the numbers he should have in the regular season, he wanted CC type money, and in his career has one good major league season to his name.
Ruben the signed fan favorites Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, and Joe Blanton to three years extensions, at what I believe to be below market value. Shane is one of the best fielders, has one of the best arms, and is amazing in the box and on the bases. Chooch is one of the best defensive catchers and has been improving in the box, and Blanton is a perfect starter to slot in somewhere in the 3-5 slots.
He got rid of light hitting Bruntlett, for light hitting (but better hitting) utility man Juan Castro. He added back up catcher Brian Schneider previously of the Nats and Mets. He brough Placido Polanco back as an upgrade at 3B. Ross Gload is now on as a more consistent bat bench to pair up with Greg Dobbs. Brian Bocock has been brought in to create some competition in the infield. The two Cubans, Jose Contreras and Danys Baez are now in town. Former Yankees Cody Ransom and Freddy Guzman have switched over to red pinstripes, while Perfect Game Saving Dewayne Wise is here now, and Wilson Valdez, the former Met is now a Phillie as well.
Our next entry will focus on lineups and rotations as well as what we lost this offseason.
Phillies News and Notes
Pedro Martinez: The recently signed righty has thrown two simulated games this week in Clearwater, FL. He threw 64 pitches the first time, and 60 the most recent. He is scheduled to start a rehab game at Brighthouse Networks Field in Clearwater Sunday aginst the St. Lucie Mets. If all goes well he will be on schedule to throw his final of three rehab starts on August 5.
Bullpen shuffle: J.C. Romero and Chad Durbin were both placed on the 15-Day DL. Durbin has a strained right latissmus, and Romero is out with a strained left forearm. Apparently Durbin has been hiding this from the coaching staff for about a month, and he could be back on the 7th. Romero could be back earlier, as his move was retroactive to Monday. The Phillies recalled Tyler Walker and Andrew Carpenter. Walker has been very good at Triple-A and in the majors this year and was very recently sent down. Carpenter is back after having a bad spot start but has a 2.75 ERA in Triple-A.
Phillies still pursuing Halladay: There have been reports that if Halladay is traded he will be headed to Philly. Rumors are that the Jays would want either J.A. Happ or Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown or Michael Taylor, Jason Donald, and another prospect. Happ has been amazing at the major league level this year, and Drabek has dazzled at High-A and Double-A. Brown is coming back from a fractured finger and has been very good this year. Taylor was recently promoted to Triple-A after crushing Double-A pitching. Donald has had a very bad year at Lehigh Valley. With Halladay the Phillies would be World Series favorites for the next two years. With the prospects they have a good chance of being good for another ten years.
Phillies Roundup 7/16
MLB: The Phillies shut out the second place Marlins 4-0 tonight behind a strong outing from Jamie Moyer. The 46 year old had a perfect game through four innings before Jorge Cantu led of the fifth with a single. He improved to 9-6 on the season and lowered his ERA from 5.99 to 5.58. All together he threw seven innings of one hit ball, with a walk and four strikeouts. It was his 255th career victory. The four strikeouts also got him to a career mark of 2305. He reached another milestone by recording his 1100 base on balls. Moyer has now thrown 101.2 innings pitched this year through 18 games, giving him 3848.1 for his career. In the 8th Madson threw a perfect inning, and Romero ended the game with a perfect 9th. Both now have an ERA under 3.00(Madson-2.96, Romero-2.93). Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Jayson Werth were a combined 3-16 with five strikeouts, four of them coming from Werth whose average dropped to .260. The two big lefties in the lineup, Howard and Ibanez were a combined 4-7 with 3 Home Runs, 4 Runs Batted In, and 4 Runs Scored. Ibanez had two of those homers and now has 24 on the year, while Howard now has 23. Utley and Ruiz both added doubles and Feliz added a single. Even Jamie managed to get a hit to help his own cause, meaning the only Phillies player not to get a hit in the starting lineup was Wert, in this 10 hit barrage. The Phillies are now 10 games over .500.
IronPigs: The Pigs won 5-4 over Rochester tonight at home. Former Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick, who is trying to regain his form looked like the Kyle we all liked throwing 8 innings of two run ball. He struck out 4, while lowering his ERA to 3.42 and only throwing 87 pitches before Sergio Escalona came in to give up two more runs, but Register was able to close it out for his 4th save of the season. Phillies prospect Michael Taylor was called up from Double A went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored in his debut. The offensive player of the game was Terry Tiffee who went 2-4 with two runs batted in, and a double.
R-Phils: The R-Phils lost 5-2 to New Britain tonight behind Yohan Flande.Flande was only able to last five innings and gave up five runs whil only striking out three. His ERA is not at 7.58 since the jump to Double A. Flande is used to dominating hitters because he has done that all through the minors, but this looks like a new challenge for the young prospect. Jeremy Slayden was 2-4 with a solo shot.
Threshers: The Threshers fell 4-3 to the Brevard County Manatees on their 80′s Night. Cloyd got the start and allowed three earned runs in 6.2 innings. Carlos Monasterios, who was acquired in the Abreu deal threw 1.1 perfect innings while striking out two.
BlueClaws: Lakewood was on the losing end of a 14-11 slugfest tonight. De Fratus allowed nine runs in four innings. Gose did something incredible and stole his 50th base of the year. Top 10 prospect Travis d’Arnaud was 4-5 and earned his 49th run batted in of the season. He has had a double, as did Collier. Gose ripped a triple as well and got his 34th run batted in.
CrossCutters: Williamsport won 3-1 over Brooklyn behind seven strong innings from Lebron, who improved to 3-1. Last years 1st Round Draft Pick Anthony Hewitt went 0-4 dropping his average to .216.
Rookie Phillies: The Rookie Phils blew out the Jays 9-1 today at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater, FL. I was in attendance for the game to see Threshers SS Freddy Galvis and Phillies #1 Prospect Dominic Brown play in some rehab games. Also got to see our first pick in the 09 Draft, Kelly Dugan play. The three went a combined 3-11 with three runs scored and a run batted in. The majority of the offense came from 1B Darin Ruf and 3B Matthew McConnell who went a combined 4-8 with 3 RBI’s. Todd Van Steensel through six innings of 1-run ball while striking out seven with some amazing breaking pitches. Justin Beal and Harol Torentino threw 3 innings of hitless ball and struck out two.
