The IronPigs are very talented this year with a lot of guys with major league experience.
Some returnees include Andy Tracy, John Mayberry, Rich Thompson, Jake Woods, Paul Hoover, and Brian Mazone.
Brandon Duckworth is back with the Phillies organization and new members of the Phillies organization include Wilson Valdez, Ryan Vogelsong, Dane Sardinha, Ehren Wasserman, and Chris Duffy.
Phillies top prospects on the team include Mayberry, Joe Savery, Mike Zagurski, and Scott Mathieson.
Two of the guys on the roster have odd claims to fame. DeWayne Wise robbed a homer in the 9th inning of Mark Buehrle’s perfect game, and Cody Ransom was Alex Rodriguez’s fill in for the month of April 2009.
Speed will be provided by Mayberry and Thompson. Power will be provided by Mayberry, Tracy, Ransom, and Sellers.
Update
Wow, a lot has happened in the past week. Doc not coming, Cliff is here though. We got the right-handed bat we need off of the bench in Ben Fransisco. But it came at a big price. We lost three guys I know personally in Carrasco/Donald/Marson, and we lost a guy I have heard a lot of good things about in Knapp. But at least we still have Happ. Myers is on his way back. As is Romero and Durbin. Mayberry back in Lehigh Valley. Looks like Lopez and most likely Happ are either going to the bullpen or to Lehigh. This is what I think we will see in September:
SP- Cole Hamels
SP- Cliff Lee
SP- Joe Blanton
SP- J.A. Happ
SP- Jamie Moyer
SP- Pedro Martinez
CL- Brad Lidge
SU- Brett Myers
SU- Ryan Madson
MI- J.C. Romero
MI- Scott Eyre
RP- Clay Condrey
RP- Chad Durbin
So we went from not having enough bullpen help to having a very deep bullpen. Having six starters will allow all of our starters to be even better than they have been. It will give Cliff, Cole, J.A., Joe, Pedro, and Jamie more rest, which should make them pitch even better. Jimmy and Jayson are heating up.
Some Phillies have the weirdest luck
Yes, I said luck. Meaning there is a great amount of luck in any players performance over the course of a season. Here is a look at some of the lucky and unlucky Phillies based of of BABIP(Batting Average on Balls in Play):
Unlucky:
Jimmy Rollins-.243
Eric Bruntlett-.185
John Mayberry Jr-.192
Brad Lidge-.363
Cole Hamels-.344
Chan Ho Park-.341
You can expect all of these players performances to get better once their luck turns around. So we should see our ace, closer, leadoff hitter, and bench all get better.
Lucky:
J.C. Romero-.224
Scott Eyre-.235
J.A. Happ-.242
Shane Victorino-.334
Chase Utley-.331
With Happ, he is pitching above his expectations and should come back to Earth slightly, or could turn into the best #4 or 5 guy in the big leagues. Utley and Victorino usually have higher BABIP because most of their’s are doubles, triples, or home runs. Romero and Eyre are situational lefties out of the pen, which leads to the having a lower BABIP. Good to see that we should be getting better.
7/17 Phillies Preview
Phillies send their ace Cole Hamels to the mound hoping he can regain his 08 form. He will be challenged by Marlins struggling ace Ricky Nolasco. Hamels is looking to have the same kind of night that Moyer did against a very streaky Marlins offense. Hoping he can make his ERA drop 41 points like his mentor Jamie Moyer did last night against the Marlins. With this start Hamels should break the 100 IP mark for the season, as he is only 2 IP away. Pedro Martinez was playing catch and getting to know the team today in Miami. He is expected to through a bullpen session Saturday before reporting to the Phillies Spring Training Facility in Clearwater, FL to start his rehab and hopefully be back in the majors in time for the Giants series. Imagine a Randy Johnson-Pedro Martinez matchup. Raul Ibanez will be seeking his 25th HR of the year. Utley will be aiming for his 100th hit of the season and Shane will be going for his team leading 110th. Even though Greg Dobbs is hitting only .269 he does have 5 HR and an OPS of 774. The Phils, who had no everyday players hit over .300 last season currently have 3 hitting over that mark in Utley, Victorino, and Ibanez. Feliz is keeping up his .292 BA and making his case for the Phils brass to pick up his option for the 2010 season. He also is 3rd on the team in hits and has 25 XBH. The Phillies currently have 64 SB and only 16 CS. Utley is 9/9, Ibanez is 4/4, and Howard is 4/4 as well. Rollins and Victorino are a combined 31/43 and Werth is 12/14. The Phils also have the most potent offense in the NL, having 4 players with 20+ HR and their 2-7 hitters all on pace for 80+ RBI. The main reason the bench has not been a strength for the Phillies is due to the fact that Bruntlett has a .139 AVG and Mayberry has a .180 AVG.
