Phillies departures and Predictions

We lost a lot of talent this off season, but we also lost a lot of bad
attitudes. Brett Myers signed with former Phillies GM Ed Wade and the
Astros, mainly because Ed Wade stockpiles former Phillies. As you may
recall Myers was not huge with the fans due to some off the field
incidents and lack of performance on the field. Chan Ho Park is still a
free agent because he seems to think he can make it as a starter….HA!
Scott Eyre has retired because the Phillies wouldn’t offer him a major
league contract. Scott will be missed as he brightened everyone’s day
up. Miguel Cairo is a Red now, thank God. Cliff Lee and his wanted
$20+M salary is gone to Seattle. Pedro Feliz has taken his slick
fielding, soft batting self to Houston as well.

Phillies Postgame 7/23

What happened: The Phillies scored early and often to win the makeup game with the Padres at Citizens Bank Park. Final Score, Phillies 9- Padres 4.

Who did what:

Hamels- The Phils ace went seven innings, throwing 114 pitches to do so. Hamels allowed three runs of four hits and two walk, striking out six. He lowered his ERA six points to 4.66.

Rollins- The hot-hitting leadoff hitter went 2-4. He added an RBI, a walk, and two runs. He raised his average three points to .238. He also stole his 17th base, and got his 24th double.

Victorino- The Final Vote winner went 2-4. Raising his average three points to .310.

Utley- The All-Star went 1-3. He also walked twice, and drove in his 67th RBI. He raised his average a point to .303.

Howard- The big lefty went 1-4. He notched two more strikeouts and his 70th RBI. His average dropped a point to .258. He also walked once.

Ibanez- Went 1-5. Notching his 20th double, and 70th RBI as he knocked in two. He also struck out and walked. His average dropped two points to .309.

Werth- Went 3-5. Notching his 16th and 17th doubles along with his 62nd RBI. His average rose five points to .271.

Ruiz- The struggling catcher went 1-4. That one hit though was his 5th homer of the year. His average stands at .229.

Carpenter- In his first appearance in 09 out of the bullpen, the recently brough up pitcher allowed a run and two hits to go with a walk in a third of an inning. His ERA rose to 11.57.

Park- Continued his hot streak out of the bullpen, getting out of Carpenter’s jam and pitching the final 1.2 innings. He struck out one and lowered his ERA to 5.07.

Some Phillies have the weirdest luck

Yes, I said luck. Meaning there is a great amount of luck in any players performance over the course of a season. Here is a look at some of the lucky and unlucky Phillies based of of BABIP(Batting Average on Balls in Play):

Unlucky:

Jimmy Rollins-.243

Eric Bruntlett-.185

John Mayberry Jr-.192

Brad Lidge-.363

Cole Hamels-.344

Chan Ho Park-.341

You can expect all of these players performances to get better once their luck turns around. So we should see our ace, closer, leadoff hitter, and bench all get better.

Lucky:

J.C. Romero-.224

Scott Eyre-.235

J.A. Happ-.242

Shane Victorino-.334

Chase Utley-.331

With Happ, he is pitching above his expectations and should come back to Earth slightly, or could turn into the best #4 or 5 guy in the big leagues. Utley and Victorino usually have higher BABIP because most of their’s are doubles, triples, or home runs. Romero and Eyre are situational lefties out of the pen, which leads to the having a lower BABIP. Good to see that we should be getting better.

Game Delayed

The Phillies game in Florida is being delayed right now in the Middle of the 6th inning. It is an official game, so if they call it the Phillies and Cole Hamels get the win. Ricky Nolasco has not pitched like an ace tonight. Laboring through 6 innings on 93 pitches, only 54 of them good for strikes. He has allowed four runs while striking out five and walking two, also giving up seven hits. His ERA has risen to 5.77. Hamels on the other hand, has pitched like a true ace. Allowing just one run on four hits and one walk in five innings. He has struck out five and has only thrown 68 pitches, 52 for strikes. His ERA has lowered to 4.72, even after allowing a lead-off homer to Chris Coughlan. Chase Utley hit his 21st Home Run of the season driving in Jimmy Rollins who led off the game with a double. It was Rollins 22nd 2B, and Pedro Feliz later got his 19th 2B, and his 46th RBI. Utley’s two runs batted in brought his season total all the way up to 63. Raul Ibanez has continued his great second half start by going 2-3 with a run scored. Every Phils position player, except for All-Star Shane Victorino has reached base tonight, even Ryan Howard who has gone 1-3. I will keep you updated on the status of the game.

Update(10:04): Chan Ho Park has replaced Cole Hamels as the game is now going again. Park just struck Hanley Ramirez out to start the inning.

5/21 Organization Roundup

Phillies(MLB): The Phils sent Joe Blanton to the hill and the big righty rolled over the Reds. He gave up five runs in five innings, striking out four, and walking one. He raised his ERA to 7.11 through eight starts. Clay Condrey stayed hot earning his third hold of the season, he pitched a scoreless inning lowering his ERA to 2.38. Chan Ho Park made his first relief appearance since being demoted to the bullpen. He also threw a shutout inning, striking out one and walking two. His ERA lowered to 6.88. Scott Eyre and Sergio Escalona each added an inning on the mound, they gave up zero runs. Eyre lowered his ERA to 3.60 while Escalona kept his ERA perfect at 0.00. Jimmy Rollins who is trying to break out of a season long slump went 4-6 with two runs score, a stolend base, and an RBI. That raised his AVG to .234. Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez combined to go 5-9, with two doubles, two homers, and seven runs batted in. Greg Dobbs hit his first homer of the season, and Pedro Feliz, Shane Victorino, and Carlos Ruiz all added a double each. Feliz hit for the pitcher and came in to play third, he raised his average to .310.

IronPigs(AAA): The Pigs hosted the Durham Bulls Thursday. It was the first game of a 4 game series. The Bulls are loaded with offensive firepower having prospects Reid Brignac, Justin Ruggiano, Matt Joyce, and John Jaso. Those four combined to go 7-16 with three runs batted in and four runs scored on their way to beating the Pigs 5-2. Rich Thompson and J.J. Furmaniak both had runs batted in. John Mayberry added a hit, and David Newhan continued his hot streak going 2-3 with a run scored. The bullpen and defense blew six scoreless innings from Drew Carpenter who recently earned his first ML win. He lowered his ERA to 4.02. Gary Majewski blew his second save, and was tagged with his third loss.

R-Phils(AA): The R-Phils fell 7-1 to the Rock Cats. Quintin Berry and Michael Taylor each had a hit, with Taylor adding an RBI. Taylor’s lone hit was a double, and he now has 25 RBI’s on the season. He is the #6 prospect in the Phils organization according to Baseball America. Vance Worley pitched 7 innings of 3 run ball. Overholt and Anderson combined to give up 4 runs in 1 inning. Fransisco Butto struck out two in a scorless inning, lowering his ERA to 4.26.

Threshers(High-A): The Threshers were rained out for the 4th consecutive game.

Surprises

They have been a good amount of surprises for the Phillies this year. Some good and some bad. Here is a look at each one:

Good: Raul Ibanez: Ibanez was picked up to take over for Pat Burrell in LF and so far has done a tremendous job. Known mainly as an RBI over the past couple years Ibanez is on a tear. Through the 5/12 game he had already hit 9 HR’s and had 25 RBI’s.

Here is a comparison of Ibanez and Burrell so far:

Ibanez- 30 G, 24 R, 38/115, 76 TB, 9 2B, 1 3B, 9 HR, 12 BB, 3 SB, 25 RBI, .330 BA, .661 SLG, .397 OBP, 0 Errors, 2 Assists

Burrell- 30 G, 9 R, 27/108, 34 TB, 4 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 16 BB, 1 SB, 17 RBI, .250 AVG,  .315 SLG, .349 OBP

So overall Ibanez is doing much better than Burrell. Many people questioned the Phillies signing Ibanez to a 3 year deal. Ibanez is a health freak and as we all have seen so far has tons left in the tank.

Bad: Jimmy Rollins: Rollins has been in a slump all season. He is hitting .198 with 6 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 2 SB, and 10 RBI. Manuel has given Rollins days off, moved him down to 5th in the lineup for a game and Rollins is still trying to break out of his slump. The Phils need Rollins to be his former self and get on and score runs.

Good: Pedro Feliz and Chase Utley: Both had major offseason surgery. Utley had hip surgery while Feliz had back surgery. Utley has been hitting in the three hole while Feliz is down in the 7th spot in the line-up. Here are their stats so far:

Utley- 29 G, 30/102, 23 R, 62 TB, 2 2B, 0 3B, 10 HR, 23 RBI, 17 BB, 2 SB, .294 BA, .419 OBP, .608 SLG

Feliz- 30 G, 30/99, 13 R, 42 TB, 6 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 19 RBI, 13 BB, 0 SB, .303 BA, .377 OBP, .424 SLG

Bad: Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer, Joe Blanton, Chan Ho Park, Brett Myers: The Starting Rotation is giving up HR’s like crazy. Myers has been the most effective but still has a 4.81 ERA. All 4 of the others have ERA’s above 6. Here are their stats as a whole:

8-10, 164.2 IP, 117 K, 38 HRA, 12 HBP, 58 BB

Hamels has 22 SO, 6 BB, and 5 HRA in 23.1 IP which leads to a 6.17 ERA.

It looks as if they are starting to turn things around as Park, and Hamels have both put in good outings in their last starts.

Good: Individul Hitting Performances: Here they are:

 .389 AVG(Stairs), .295 AVG(Werth), .280 AVG(Howard), 9 2B(Howard), 8 2B(Werth), 3 3B(Victorino), 7 SB(Werth), 3 SB(Victorino),  6 HR(Howard), 6 HR(Werth)

Bad: Deaths: The Phillies have suffered two huge blows to their organization since the season began. Hall of Fame Broadcaster Harry Kalas passed away in Washington before the Nationals game and former Manager Danny Ozark passed away recently.
