The Reading Phillies might be the most exciting team to watch in the Phillies farm system this year. Key returnees include Sergio Escalona, Michael Stutes, Vance Worley, Tuffy Gosewisch, Ozzie Chavez, Kevin Mahar, Quintin Berry, and Brian Stavisky.

The R-Phils are loaded with top Phillies prospects. Including Escalona, Stutes, Worley, Berry, Chapman, Cisco, Flande, Naylor, Rosenberg, Galvis, and Schimer. The Phillies overall top prospect is here in Domonic Brown as well as what I believe to be the second best prospect in Tyson Gillies. They will pair together with Quintin Berry to give the R-Phils one of the best, if not the best outfields in all of minor league baseball, both talent and stat wise. Gillies comes over from the Seattle organization with Aumont, and J.C. Ramirez(Clearwater) as the pieces from the Cliff Lee deal.

The IronPigs are very talented this year with a lot of guys with major league experience.

Some returnees include Andy Tracy, John Mayberry, Rich Thompson, Jake Woods, Paul Hoover, and Brian Mazone.

Brandon Duckworth is back with the Phillies organization and new members of the Phillies organization include Wilson Valdez, Ryan Vogelsong, Dane Sardinha, Ehren Wasserman, and Chris Duffy.

Phillies top prospects on the team include Mayberry, Joe Savery, Mike Zagurski, and Scott Mathieson.

Two of the guys on the roster have odd claims to fame. DeWayne Wise robbed a homer in the 9th inning of Mark Buehrle’s perfect game, and Cody Ransom was Alex Rodriguez’s fill in for the month of April 2009.

Speed will be provided by Mayberry and Thompson. Power will be provided by Mayberry, Tracy, Ransom, and Sellers.

Romero Update

J.C. Romero pitched in a Minor League scrimmage game tonight between the Clearwater threshers and the Lakewood Blue Claws. Romero faced all righties and was a little wild to start. But settled down nicely and threw 1 1/3 innings. After the game he said he felt great and will probably be here for about another week. He seemed to be in good spirits

***

Catching prospect Sebastian Valle crushed a home run to left field, and Steve Susdorf also hit a homer to right. Prospect’s Jesus Sanchez, Christopher Kissock, and J.C. Ramirez all threw an inning each for the Threshers, while Brody Colvin pitched an inning for the Blue Claws.

Opening Day

Roy Halladay delivered what was expected on Opening Day and Placido Polanco returned to the City of Brotherly Love with a bang.

Halladay threw only 88 pitches in his seven innings of one run ball. He struck out nine and walked two. His only run was allowed in the first inning when Ryan Zimmerman doubled home Nyjer Morgan. 59 of his 88 pitchers were strikes He got the Nationals to hit into eight groundouts compared to three flyouts which is good because of CBP. Antonio Bastardo, Danys Baez, and David Herndon combined to pitch two scoreless innings while striking out two.

Polanco had six RBI’s and hit a grand slam. In all he was 3-5 with a home run and six ribbies. Ryan Howard got off to hit a hot start hitting his first homer of the season and driving in two. Jimmy got off to a much better start than last year as well, he went 2-4 with two runs scored, a triple, stolen base, and drove in a run. Chase reached base four times, including three walks. Werth, Ibanez, and Victorino combined to go 3-14 with one run and four runs scored, as well as a fielding error by Raul. Carlos Ruiz went 1-2 with three walks and two runs scored. Even Roy got a hit and a run batted in. All nine starters got at least one hit.

The Phillies have an off day tomorrow. They will send Cole Hamels to the mound on Thursday against Jason Marquis.

Rotation Preview

So Jamie Moyer beat out Kyle Kendrick officially today and there is no surprise there. Not to knock Kendrick down but Moyer is getting paid 8 million this yearand has 258 career victories. With that announcement in looks as if these will be the career numbers of the Starting Rotation  on Opening Day.

Halladay- 148 W, 2046.2 IP, 49 CG, 15 SHO, 1495 K,    477 BB (Including Int)
Hamels-    48 W,   736.2 IP,   6 CG,  4 SHO,   686 K,    206 BB (Including Int)
Blanton-    63 W, 1026.2 IP,   6 CG,  2 SHO,   643 K,    310 BB (Including Int)
Happ-       13 W,   201.2 IP,   3 CG,  2 SHO,   150 K,      75 BB (Including Int)
Moyer-    258 W, 3908.2 IP, 31 CG,  9 SHO,   2342 K, 1184 BB (Including Int)

With a bounce back year for Cole where his ERA gets back around 3.45, and a year where Happy stays below 3.50, and Blanton stays around 4.00, and Moyer/Kendrick put up a 4.50 ERA the Phillies could have a very good rotation.

The Phillies released the following 12 players this week: Brad Wilkerson, Joe Bisenius, Rick Guttormson, Gus Milner, Arlon Quiroz, Freddy Ballestas, Ryan Bergh, Jeremy Hamilton, Spencer Arroyo, Sean Grieve, Jordan Meaker, Todd Van Steensel. I have know Joe for many years since he was a Threshers player and I wish the best of luck to him and all other 11 players. Brad Wilkerson, the MLB vet was the most notable of the cuts. I hadn’t seen him playing in many games so it wasn’t a surprise to see him released.

Two more games here in Clearwater for the Phillies. The yplay the Blue Jays tomorrow with Roy Halladay going to the mound, and the Pirates on Thursday. Both games start at 1:05. After that the minor leaguers will stay and play games on the 2nd and 3rd and break camp on the 4th.

Spring Update

If this was the regular season and Roy Halladay was on pace for 200 innings, he would also be on pace for 320 strikeouts. He has pitched five innings this spring and struck out eight, only allowing five hits and no walks. His five strikeouts yesterday came off of three Braves regulars; McLouth, Prado, and McCann. Halladay is looking better than advertised as of right now, even thought it is only a week into Spring Training.

Jayson Werth hit his first spring homer.

Ben Fransisco added a double, while Werth, Fransisco, Mayberry, and Schneider drove in all of the Phillies runs.

Ryan Madson was hit pretty bad in one inning of work, allowing three hits, four runs, two earned, and walking two in his first Grapefruit League game.

Danys Baez continued his dominance of the Grapefruit League, adding another scoreless inning, and a win to his spring resume. Sergio Escalona, a candidate for the final bullpen spot, pitched one perfect inning, lowering his ERA to 9.00. Andrew Carpenter got credited with the save while throwing three innings of one hit ball and striking out two. Greg Dobbs was credited with an error as well.

Today Jamie Moyer takes on the Blue Jays in a “B” game at 10 am at Brighthouse Networks Field in Clearwater, while Cole Hamels take on the Blue Jays at 1:05 at Knology Park in Dunedin in Phillies Grapefruit League action.

3/5/2010

“B Game”
Brighthouse networks Field
10 a.m.
Blue Jays @ Phillies

Moyer: 3 IP, 3 H, 3 So…Very good command, was hitting all of his spots and making a lot of guys miss, and was connecting with catcher Tuffy Gosewisch.

Durbin: 2 IP, Wild Pitch, HR, 3 H, BB, 2 ER, 3 SO…Had very little control, and little to no mound presence.

Madson: IP, 2 H, ER…Madson was another Phillies reliever to not look good in his first outing.

Mathieson: IP, BB…A contender for a bullpen spot, Mathieson pitched amazing, and was netter than bullpen locks Durbin and Madson.

Bocock: 2B, BB, Reached on Error

Wise: 1B, Lined out to center to end the game with the bases loaded

Tracy: BB

Gillies: 2 SO, AST, BB, 1B

Galvis: BB, R

Dobbs: BB, RBI, struck out with bases loaded and 1 out in last inning

Berry: BB, SB, R

Gosewisch: 1B, RBI

In the bottom of the 5th the Blue Jays pitcher had walked the bases loaded, and after walking in a run he was lifted as injured and the inning was over.

MVP of the Game: Jamie Moyer/Scott Mathieson
